Amy Dowden rings the chemo bell after her toughest battle yet — ‘I’m stronger than I ever knew’

Amy Dowden has shared one of the most powerful moments of her life after finally ringing the chemo bell — marking the end of an exhausting and deeply emotional chapter. What began with the devastating words “I’m so sorry Amy, it’s cancer” quickly turned into a journey filled with fear, pain and unimaginable challenges, both physically and mentally.

In just a short space of time, Amy faced a mastectomy, intense hormone injections for fertility preservation, egg retrieval, chemotherapy and the shutting down of her ovaries — all while coping with a Crohn’s flare-up and serious complications including sepsis and blood clots. She openly admits that the process took more than just her hair, lashes and nails; it also took away her sense of normality, her confidence and, most heartbreakingly, her ability to dance — the thing that defines her.

Despite struggling to recognise herself in the mirror, Amy says this difficult chapter has given her something priceless: perspective, strength and an even deeper appreciation for life. She credits the incredible oncology team, her loving family and close friends for supporting both her and partner Ben through their darkest days.

Although her journey is not fully over and further scans will determine whether more surgery is needed, ringing the bell symbolised hope — a moment she once feared she might never reach. Now, with cautious optimism, Amy looks ahead to healing, recovery and the day she can finally step back into the training room.

Her message is one of resilience, gratitude and awareness, urging everyone to check themselves and listen to their bodies, because early action can change everything.
